Hell on Earth
-Hi there 99. I have just received news from my friends from the former neighbor´s tambo.
-Hi Negrita. I´m a little busy right now, but tell me are there good news?
-Good and bad, said the cow.
-Go ahead, shoot.
-Well it seems that my Holando-Argentina best friend got so popular that she´s on stamps!
-Wow... and why´s was that?
-Because of her spots
-...?
-Her spots turned out to be the world map. I think that´s why she was always looking at the airplanes.
-So, she´s being photographed?
-Nah... she´s not the model type. She goes to schools to teach geography to the children.
-And the bad news?
-The other cows were sent to Hell on Earth: the feedlot.

-God bless their souls Negrita...
-I´ll pray for them tonight 99...

The hare and the farm factories
-I never tried.
-Well, we meet every once in a while to discuss stuff. This morning we gathered to discuss factory farming.
-You mean those places that treat farm animals as mere factory parts? They are disgusting. I distrust the kind of humans that think that the ends justify the means.
-You don´t? Feedlot animals are subjected to torture and cruelty of all kinds. Feedlots have come under criticism even by us for human health reasons. It´s not only the degrading treatments.
-Most of us humans have those rights granted by some Constitución. Some go further and believe in the Pursuit of Happiness. What else?
freedom from discomfort
freedom from pain, injury or disease
freedom to express normal behavior
freedom from fear and distress
-Not for the herd...? I never thought you were individualistic. I thought your first will was to preserve the herd.
-I don´t know. But here, we do. See, if Mr. Hare didn´t think that way he wouldn´t have run to help.
-You mean it´s not just you, the cows? The hares too?
-Everybody in this farm thinks like that. Even you.
-... I thought I only had environmental concerns...
I left the little rebel on the ground near the bird and the cow. I knew they were going to take good care of him. I whispered namasté, the three of them answered back and I left.
I had a lot of thinking to do.

Go slow
I was daydreaming when the cow came carrying a rolled-up picture in her ear.
-Hi 99!
-Hi Negrita... uhmm... what´s that thing in your ear?
-Well, I don´t have any pockets, you know, I´m always naked. I need a favor from you. Said the cow
-Go ahead. Shoot.
-I want you to make this cake for some friends of mine that are leaving- she explained while unrolling the picture-I´m not much of a cook but I can try. What´s the occasion?
-I want to cheer them up because they´re closing the nearby tambo.
-Why are they doing so?
-Same old, same old. Dairy farms are not profitable any more so the owners are going for crops, said Negrita followed by an open nostrils sigh
-Do you think it´s for biodiesel?
-Who knows... I would tell them, if they ever listened to a cow, a good energy saving advice: to smile! It takes 65 muscles to tighten up your face and only 15 to smile. Humans can do it better than us and still prefer to waste calories in fuel. But as the Native Indian proverb says: it is not possible to wake up a person that pretends to be asleep.
-... I was just daydreaming... not sleeping..., I tried
-I didn´t mean you. You know how to deal with the Kairos.
-Do I? What do you mean Negrita?
-I mean you don´t go with Chronos you flow in the Kairos.
-Yeah, kairos moments alter destiny. Although some say that I´m just lazy. You mention it because I like to live slow?
-No, not because of that. I mean you Carpe Diem. I ´ve seen you, 99.
-Negrita, let me explain it to you. People are not satisfied to just engage in actions or behaviors but also need to believe that what they do is good. I believe enjoying is good. I also believe that the perfect moment is always coming at the precise corner, the right crossroad, when the stars line up. Before that moment it´s just counting endless minutes until the next year.
Remember the rabbit of Alice in Wonderland, so obsessed with the watch? I´ve been seeking kairos since I began to find time and space metaphors. Like that tale about the hunter and the lion...
-Sure 99, wasn´t it Italo Calvino?. That´s what I meant. Seize kairos!
-It´s healthy too. So that´s how cows feel about time?
-Cattlehood is a bit different in anatomical, physiological, and evolutionary terms but we seek the same. Mainly, the satisfaction of preferences. That´s why I want you to make me the cake.
-Everyday I know more about your ethics, Negrita. You focus on the rightness or wrongness of actions themselves, not the rightness or wrongness of the consequences of those actions, but don´t you think that flour and sugar might be a little indigestible for your friends?
-Oh no, no, no! Please make sure that you fill it with sorghum sprouts! Lots of them! and maybe some linen seeds if it´s not too much to ask. I want them to have fun, she urged me very excited
-Ok, I´ll try. See you later.
-Cook it slowly, they like it tender. Thanks 99 and Happy New Year.buenos aires

NIMBY, BANANA
Very much of a syntheses... although not enough...
I understand that NIMBY has been used in some radical non rational oppositions in the past
The Río de La Plata bathes my town (some people call it the Paris of South America) and the worldwide known beautiful Uruguayan beaches. We are all simple people living in both sides of a Sweet Sea (very accurate and original name for the river). In addition the Río de La Plata sits on one of the biggest water reservoirs of the world, the Guaraní Aquifer. No piranhas.
- Careless politicians.
- Imported sharks.

Instinct / Instinto
It´s been found that a swarm is formed when individuals both attract and repel but do not try to orient themselves to their neighbors. A torus takes place when they move around an empty circle to try to orient themselves to their closest neighbors. A flock is finally achieved when the individuals move with a strong feeling of group in one direction.
Do you keep an eye on your Internet neighborhood? It seems to me that we write or read in a very similar way, according to our inner swarm. If it happens that we take collective decisions like that too, it´s a great opportunity to form our flock and move towards something more important than attracting-repelling others.
Any ideas?

The clouds and the watermelons
It happened one very warm day when I was driving back to the ranch. I had to stop the truck because I felt lost even with the paved road ahead. It was mostly because of the clouds. Not because they obstructed my vision it was more because of their reflections. And my own reflexions. While stretching my legs I thought that probably at that very moment about half of Earth was covered by clouds.

I grabbed a piece of watermelon.
I spitted some black seeds.
- "So now some scientists are talking about 'geoengineering' the planet", I said to myself. "It seems that some are thinking on injecting sulfate particles in the upper atmosphere to increase the albedo. Shooting the clouds with some poison that nobody knows what´s going to feed us back can´t be called a 'escape route' from global warming. So vapor trails left by aircrafts are environmentally friendly and cow farts are not?"
- "Hey, finally somebody advocates for us!", a voice said from behind me.
I looked around and saw nobody. There was only me, the truck, the clouds and a black Angus chewing some grass.
I took another bite of watermelon. Summers are so warm down here in the Pampas...
- "Some want to spray aerosol compounds into the atmosphere by utilizing commercial, military and private aircrafts and calves are condemned for belching? It´s not fair...", I thought and sighed.
- "That´s what I said, thank you", said the voice again.
- "Who´s there? Is bad enough that you don´t show yourself but reading my thoughts is something I won´t allow you"
- "Sorry, sorry I didn´t mean to disturb your thoughts. My name is Negrita and I think that since aerosols cut down sunlight by large amounts, they may be spinning down the hydrological cycle of the planet. That´s pure science distorsion, maddness based on volcanic eruptions,
- "Well, nice to meet you Negrita, I´m 99", I told the cow.
- "Yeah, I know, I read your blog"
- "Well, thanks. So your opinion is...?"
- "I think that using sea water as a source for hygroscopic nuclei may produce enough cloud cover to provided an offset a year's worth of carbon increase"
- "I don´t understand..."
- "See, it´s about evaporating 50 kilograms of sea water per second. We could even, if we wished, drive the problem backwards. It is also fully controllable: you can switch it off!"
- "You mean it can be better than giant reflecting mirrors in space, or laying reflecting film in deserts, or floating white plastic islands in the ocean mimicking the reflective effect of sea?"
- "Yeah, I think it might work better"
- "So you think it´s all about the clouds?"
- "Yep. Clouds and opacity. Clouds and clouds lifetime. Clouds and albedo. Every thing's albedo is measured by how much they reflect sunlight. Bouncing back the light makes them shine, and the Earth shines like a diamond in the Universe. High thin clouds are better blankets in trapping warmth, while low thick clouds make better coolers. Want some grass?"
- "Thanks no, I´m on a diet. How do you manage your weight?", I said as I steered at the sky and thought on how much clouds have changed during my lifetime. High, warming clouds had increased while low clouds had decreased"- "I sweat. I like being black in Summer. Keeps me in shape"
- "Then again back to the subject. Sunlight heats the ocean, water escapes into the atmosphere and falls out as rain..."
- "... non-polluting, planet-saving mist..."
- "... or just cut the crap with the oil. It´s gonna rain, gotta go. Bye", and she left.
- "Bye Negrita, glad to meet you. See you around!"
I saved the rest of the watermelon for later and jumped back in the truck. I felt not so lost anymore.
Hot Summer days and watermelons just seem to go perfect together...
